With regard to stainless steel, the world of metallurgy has separated this type of steel into several classes based on the alloy elements and the microstructure. The stainless steel hoses produced by Gnali Bocia are marked ‘GNALIFLEX’. They are made from AISI 316 stainless steel: this is an austenitic steel, which means that after heat treatments, an austenitic microstructure appears along the whole component. Austenitic stainless steel is the most diffused type of steel on the market due to its properties. The alloy elements used in Gnali Bocia’s
steel hoses and their percentages are as follows: Carbon content is less than 0.15% of Carbon, sometimes reaching a maximum content of 0.025%; Chromium is between 16% and 28%; Nickel between 6% and 32%; other alloy elements are also present but exclusively in low percentages. The content of Chromium is worth noting: it is high, and this explains why a precipitation of Chromium at grain boundary could occur and therefore compromise the resistance to corrosion of the hoses. Contents as high as these, even in the presence of Chromium carbides, allow the capacity of these steels to be passivized forming a protective film on the surfaces of the component.
